Dallas-based Heritage Auctions’ animation sale on July 1 will offer one of the largest selections of artwork from Disney’s groundbreaking 1940 anthology feature Fantasia. The best of these pieces would be an energetic, epic concept painting for the Night on Bald Mountain segment created by Ken Nielsen, the rare work is expected to fetch $50,000. “We’re highlighting this sale featuring ‘The Art of Fantasia,’” said Jim Lentz, Director of Animation at Heritage Auctions. “This is one of the largest collections of production artwork – cels, animation drawings, concept art, storyboards – from this film ever in one auction. Shanghai Media Group’s WingsMedia in association with Tiny Island Productions has launched a new collaborative slate on their planned mega-franchise Starship MZ starting with a media franchise based on sci-fi animated kids series Dream Defenders. As part of its sci-fi intellectual property strategy, WingsMedia hopes to grow Starship MZ properties into China’s equivalent of the Marvel Universe franchise. Canada-based streaming service Playster acquires 350 episodes of Nevlana

Montreal, Canada-based streaming service Playster has acquired more than 350 episodes of Nelvana-produced content through a deal. Under the deal, Playster picked up non-exclusive streaming rights to eight series: Babar, Backyardigans, Pippi Longstocking, Nancy Drew, Bob & Margaret, Rupert, Hardy Boys and Berenstein Bears. The content is available to Playster subscribers in the US, UK, France, Italy and Spain. The deal comes as the streaming service looks to bolster its content library. In April last, Playster inked a deal with DHX to acquire more than 165 episodes from its library that included pre-school series Franny’s Feet, Trollz, Bo On the GO! and Animal Mechanicals. NBCUniversal greenlights two animated series

NBCUniversal’s soon to launch Universal Kids network has given the go ahead to two new original animated series namely Norm and Powerbirds for its Sprout pre-school block. Along with, the net has also announced the premiere date for Kody Kapow. Created by two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Steve Breen, Powerbirds (pictured) follows the adventures of two pet parakeets that happen to live secret superhero lives. The series is expected to debut in early 2019.  Meanwhile Norm is a stop-motion series scheduled to release in 2019. It stars the son of Mother Nature. As a handyman of the forest, he uses his wits and a sprinkle of magic to solve problems for his eccentric animal friends.
