Cloud service will help games developers create 3D figures faster
Software firm Autodesk has launched a new cloud-based service that could help games developers create 3D characters more quickly than they would be able to with their own hardware.
Autodesk Character Generator allows users to create all elements of a character from the body and face to hair and clothes. The ready-to-animate results can then be exported for use in other Autodesk applications such as Maya, 3ds Max or Unity.
The service has emerged from the company’s technology preview, dubbed Project Pinocchio, which went into public beta testing last year, and can be used by anyone for free.
However, Autodesk Cloud Credits are required to access more advanced features, such as downloading high-resolution versions of characters.
The service offers an almost unlimited array of skin, eye, hair, clothing and shoes to choose from, the company claims.
“You can create, customise, and download your very own rigged 3D characters from a catalog of over 100 body types, outfits, hairstyles, and physical attributes in a few simple steps,” said Scott Sheppard, program manager for Autodesk Labs.
He said that the firm developed the service in the cloud as it was more practical than creating apps for individual devices.
“Yes we could port our powerful applications to iPhones and the wide variety of flavors of Android devices, attempting to account for the particulars of each one, or we can make our applications available as services from servers in the cloud with lots of CPU power and memory suited to the job,” he said.
The service is available immediately.
