Disney is developing a fresh fairytale film, which will center on an African princess, ‘Sade’.
According to media reports, the script for the film will be co-written by Ola Shokunbi and Lindsey Reed Palmer who originally pitched the idea to Disney.
The studio also confirmed Rick Famuyiwa and Scott Falconer as the producer and executive producer for the new movie. However, no details on the director have been revealed yet.
The news came out after Disney released its live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, and announced the upcoming remakes of The Lion King and Mulan.
The story will be dominated by an African character and revolves around the princess who discovers her magical powers and protects the people of her kingdom which is threatened by a mysterious evil force. With the help of the kingdom’s prince, Sadé embarks on an adventure that will allow her to embrace what makes her special and save the kingdom.
In nearly 100 years, the studio has had only one central black female character, Tiana in 2009’s “The Princess and the Frog,”, which was loosely inspired by a fable.
