Netflix picks up Ankama’s Wakfu

yugo_az3-300x168Netflix has picked up French indie Ankama Animation’s Wakfu (52 x 26 minutes).  The fantasy-adventure series based on a same-name video game was created in Ankama’s studio in Northern France, and will be available in all Netflix regions by the end of the year.

5f9bcd34a477521d810645559f74d1d9The series launches on Netflix in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and Nordic countries on September 14. It will also be available on Netflix in France, Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg when the service starts in those countries, and across Latin America, this fall.

For Ankama, it’s a chance to take its series global, tapping into Netflix’s audience of 50 million subscribers across 40 countries. Along with the animated series, its Wakfu franchise includes online and console video games, as well as comic books.

Meanwhile, Netflix has been buying up and commissioning kids shows left, right and center, including  The Adventures of Figaro Pho from Chocolate Liberation Front, a number of kids series from DreamWorks and Mattel, and Horrid Henry from Novel Entertainment.
