Netflix and Toho have announced that the first Godzilla anime feature ever created Godzilla: Monster Planet will have its global release on its streaming service on January 17. The film recently finished its theatrical run in Japan.
While we all know about Netflix, it needs to be known that Toho is a Japanese film, theater production and distribution company.
Located in a surprisingly wealthy part of Setagaya in Tokyo is the sprawling home of Toho Studios. Not only is Toho the largest and most famous film studio in Japan, but it’s the owner of one of the more internationally famous film logos on par for Asian cinema aficionados with MGM’s Technicolor roaring lion.
The film has been helmed by Kobun Shizuno and Hiroyuki Seshita in which humanity left the Earth after losing the battle against Godzilla and other giant monsters.
A few years later they return, only to discover twenty thousand years have passed and Earth’s ecosystem has evolved with Godzilla reigning atop the new food chain. They now decide to take back the planet.
A sequel to the film Godzilla: Battle Mobile Breeding City is in the works and will feature an appearance of Mecha Godzilla.
