BGF invests £2m in Milk Visual Effects

Business Growth Fund (BGF) has invested an initial £2m in Oscar-winning Milk Visual Effects, an independent visual effects company that creates innovative and complex visual effects for television and feature films. The fund receiving company will use the funding to expand its studios, invest in new technical equipment and R&D and hire the best industry talent, significantly increasing its capacity to work with the world’s leading feature film, high-end television and digital content producers such as Warner Bros., the BBC and Netflix. Milk was founded by five VFX supervisors and producers in 2013, including current CEO Will Cohen, and now employs 150 staff across its sites in London and Cardiff. FXX orders for 19 episodes of Deadpool cartoon

FXX, the home of Archer, has placed a straight-to-series order for 10 episodes of an untitled Deadpool cartoon which is being created by Donald Glover and Stephen Glover for Marvel. The Glover brothers — Golden Globe-winning Atlanta creator Donald and series staff writer Stephen will serve as show runners, executive producers and writers, with Marvel’s Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory also on board as executive producers. The show is being produced by Marvel Television in association with FX Productions and ABC Signature Studios. Just last year, Tim Miller’s Deadpool was a surprise box-office smash for 20th Century Fox, proving that there is a large audience wiling to fork over for well-done R-Rated comic-book adaptations. Baobab Studios’ Asteroids goes well with spectators

Redwood City, California-based virtual reality animation startup Baobab Studios is on cloud nine. Its recently made its second film Asteroids!, a follow-up to Invasion! that was not so long ago premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival has been lapped up. In the film, the viewer takes on the role of a helper robot alongside the popular alien duo Mac and Cheez from the first short. Just last July, the studio launched its first short film Invasion! as a VR experiment. The Light Fund Treasure Hunt 2015 raises over £8,000

Rainbow Productions has held onto its crown as champions of The Light Fund 2015 Treasure Hunt for the second year running. The event – which took place last Thursday evening (July 16th) - managed to raise over £8,000 for the industry charity. Rainbow Productions managed to stave off tough competition from Blueprint, Spearmakr and Kinnerton’s Gooners Never Say Die and Penguin Ventures, to clinch the top spot in a quest to follow a route around London’s Mayfair. Disney’s Frozen, Warner Bros.’ Gravity and Paramount’s The Wolf of Wall Street topped the list of most pirated films in 2014, according to piracy tracking firm Excipio. ‘Exodus’ Tops Box Office with $24.5M Debut

Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings easily topped the U.S. box office this weekend with a $24.5 million debut, dethroning The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1, which had held the number one spot for the past three weeks. Exodus, which cost $140 million to make after tax breaks, also opened in several international territories, earning $43.3 million around the globe for distributor 20th Century Fox for a worldwide total of $74.3 million. LIMA, UCLA Plan Licensing Course

The International Licensing Industry Merchandisers' Association and University of California Los Angeles Extension have teamed up to create a dedicated course for licensing industry professionals. The 12-week course, “Licensing Entertainment: Strategies for the Global Marketplace,” will be held at UCLA on Tuesday evenings beginning Jan. 6. The course will be led by licensing and marketing veteran Kenneth K. Markman, chief executive officer, KKM Global Brand Strategies, who has also held senior marketing posts at Universal Studios, 20th Century Fox and Mattel Toys. (more…)
