Amid reports of a Communist party crackdown on children’s literature, Winnie-the-Pooh, Peppa Pig, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and even James and his Giant Peach are feeling the heat in China. With about 220 million under-14s and a rapidly growing middle class, China is home to a potentially massive market for children’s picture books. More than 40,000 children’s books were reportedly published here last year alone. But with an aggressive Communist party campaign against supposedly hostile western ideas currently underway, foreign storybooks appear to have found themselves in a big soup. Mattel and the Alibaba Group have inked a new strategic partnership that will aim to “re-shape the way parents in China think about play.” Under the terms of the agreement, Alibaba will help Mattel meet the growing and changing needs of Chinese consumers with an omni-channel approach spanning online-to-offline. Mattel will also utilize Alibaba’s business-to-consumer marketplace Tmall.com to market and sell its products as well as leverage the company’s media ecosystem to develop and promote educational content inspired by its brands and characters. Angry Birds Drinks Head to Russia

Rovio Entertainment has partnered with Baltika Breweries (part of the Carlsberg group) to expand its line of Angry Birds-branded soft drinks to Russia. Baltika Breweries will produce and distribute four Angry Birds soft drink flavors in the region. The flavors–Red (a tropical tasting drink), Chuck (an orange beverage), Bomb (a cola tasting drink) and Minion Pig (apple-pear flavor)–will feature an all-new can design that includes award codes that unlock “Angry Birds” content.
