Amazon and Netflix together win 24 Emmy awards

SVOD giants Amazon and Netflix have edged out PBS, the perennial broadcasting powerhouse to win most of the awards at the 44th Emmy awards ceremony held last Friday night in Los Angeles. The streaming video platforms together won 24 statuettes (13 for Amazon, 11 for Netflix), while PBS annexed nine awards, six fewer than last year. Netflix and DreamWorks Animation animated comedy Trollhunters was the ceremony’s big winner by collecting six Emmys, the most multiple awards for a kids series. Its key category wins included outstanding writing in an animated programme (Marc Guggenheim), outstanding directing in an animated programme (Rodrigo Blaas, Guillermo del Toro) and outstanding performer in an animated programme (Kelsey Grammer as Blinky). The nominations of the 2017 Daytime Emmy Awards are out. In this, DreamWorks Animation has emerged as the top toon producer with 21 nods. This includes seven for Guillermo del Toro’s Trollhunters, the most of any animated programme on top of the two Individual achievement awards already announced. Amazon’s The Snowy Day and Lost in Oz both lapped up five nominations, while the four-nod club included DWA’s All Hail King Julien, Disney’s LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures and Amazon’s Tumble Leaf. This year, the most nods went to The Young and the Restless (25), The Bold and the Beautiful and General Hospital (23 each) and Days of Our Lives (22). Disney sets US on-demand premiere date of Andi Mock for March 10

  The Disney Channel has tentatively set the US on-demand premiere date of Andi Mack, a new single-cam, live-action series by Terri Minsky, creator of Lizzie McGuire on March 10. Andi Mack features Peyton Elizabeth Lee as the 13-year-old titular character who along with her free-spirited sister, charts teen life living with overprotective parents. The action series has been produced by Horizon Productions and executively produced by Michelle Manning, Minsky and Phil Baker. Aimed for children between six- to 14-year-olds, the show will make its initial debut on the Disney Channel App, Disney.com, Disney Channel, YouTube, iTunes, Amazon and Google Play.         Augmented reality and artificial intelligence company Osmo has bolstered its executive team by hiring Blake Hennon as VP, distribution. As part of Hennon’s new remit, he will lead the streamlining packaging and inventory control for Osmo’s retail partners including Best Buy, Target, Amazon and Apple stores. Earlier, Hennon had led North American sales for Anki, the company behind Cozmo, a small robot that can play games with kids and also connects to an iOS or Android app. The company also created robot toy cars. L’Oreal Paris has partnered up with Disney to create a makeup line that reflects the upcoming movie sensation. Beauty and the Beast is anticipated to be a remake of the classic Disney 1991 release, with a few twists. Starring Emma Watson, the film follows the traditional fairy tale originally published in 1740 by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve. When the trailer for the 2017 version was released May 2016, fans of the 1991 film were ecstatic. The Beauty and the Beast makeup line will include seven lipsticks along with nail polish pairings to match each lipstick. DHX Media records Q3 fiscal results driven by its digital distribution

In a period of uncertainty involving new CRTC broadcast regulations and the recent loss of its Disney license to Toronto’s Corus Entertainment, Canada’s DHX Media posted record Q3 fiscal results driven by its digital distribution business. The entertainment company generated US$71.61 million in revenues this quarter, an increase of 195% from US$24.29 million for Q3 2014. Of that 195%, distribution growth accounts for 71%, subscription revenues from last year’s purchase of the Astral Media channels (now DHX Television) makes up 70%, while proprietary production (31%), merchandising and licensing (12%), and producer and service fee revenue (9%) round out the numbers. Disney’s Iger characterized Maker as a “unique acquisition opportunity”

In Disney’s Q1 2015 earnings call with investors on Tuesday, company chairman and CEO Bob Iger said there has been “huge growth” in the streaming video numbers for Maker Studios since it was purchased by the company last spring in a deal worth up to US$950 million. He did not cite any figures to illustrate the increases. In spite of his bullish assessment, Iger characterized Maker as a “unique acquisition opportunity” that didn’t necessarily suggest a change in direction for the company overall. (more…)
