Many thought demand for animation art had petered out after a boom in the 1980s. But new generations of animators have stepped in. The animators still believe storyboarding is the best way to share your vision and thereby animate objects. Desirable periods run the gamut from the 1920s, when animation shorts began, to the late 1990s, when studios producing animated films switched from hand-painted to digital images. Walt Disney Co.’s Pixar Animation Studios, responsible for such hits as “Toy Story,” was an early practitioner of digital animation. Disney is preparing to create another live-action re-make of its classic animation, Snow White. The film is set to feature new songs from songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Erin Cressida Wilson, will allegedly write the script for the live-action re-make, after penning the likes of The Girl on the Train. The project marks yet another live-action remake of a Disney classic following the box office success of Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent Cinderella and The Jungle Book, with Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Dumbo, Mulan and The Lion King all on the way. ‘The LEGO Movie’ Wins BAFTA for Outstanding Animated Film

Interstellar’ is given the award for outstanding special effects; ‘The Bigger Picture,’ by Chris Hees, Daisy Jacobs and Jennifer Majka, wins the prize for best British short animation. The BAFTA film awards were handed out at the Royal Opera House in London on Sunday night, with The Lego Movie taking home the top prize in the animation category. While accepting the award, director Phil Lord poked some fun at the U.S. Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, which declined to nominate the film for an award, declaring BAFTA his “favorite academy by far.” (more…)

DreamWorks Animation cue’s another round of Layoffs

Layoffs are coming to DreamWorks Animation, according to a report by Variety. Earlier this month DWA Chief Creative Officer Bill Damaschke stepped down from his post as veteran producers Bonnie Arnold and Mireille Soria were named co-presidents of the struggling animation studio. Anywhere from 150 to 400 DWA employees will be getting pink-slipped in the coming months at the company’s Glendale and Redwood City, CA locations, with animators, storyboard artists and other production personnel reportedly the most likely to be affected. Nominees for Best Animated Feature are Disney’s ‘Big Hero 6,’ LAIKA’s ‘The Boxtrolls,’ DreamWorks Animation’s ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2,’ Cartoon Saloon’s ‘Song of the Sea,’and Studio Ghibli’s ‘The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.’ Directors Alfonso Cuarón and J.J. Abrams, actor Chris Pine and Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs announced the nominations for the 87th Academy Awards today, January 15.
