In a first, Dreamworks’ theatrical releases are going to start offering a little extra next year that is an animated short in front of each feature film. The studio has announced the formation of a shorts program, Dreamworks Shorts, that will kick off with Bird Karma directed by William Salazar, before the Japanese release of The Boss Baby next March. The shorts program was launched with an open pitch session for employees across the studio, at which Dreamworks Animation Film Group President Chris DeFaria and his creative team took over 25 pitches. DreamWorks and Netflix release one more teaser video of Home: Adventures with Tip & Oh

DreamWorks and Netflix have recently released another teaser video of the latest season of Home: Adventures with Tip & Oh. This time around they have done it in the form of a music video. And it is not just another cartoon music video, it features the voice of iconic pop diva Cher, who lends her voice to the Boov diva named Chercophinie. The song in the music video is titled Ooga Boo, and is exactly the kind of catchy music that one would expect from Cher. It’s also the kind of catchy music that will encourage viewers to abuse YouTube’s ‘replay’ button. It is hoped that YouTube will not limit people’s ability to re-watch a video for, say, a hundred or so times in a single day.

As part of the ongoing Voltron themed festivities at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, DreamWorks held a  panel discussion on Voltron Legenday Defender. Present on the occasion, the crew behind the series revealed that A.J. Locascio will be voicing for Prince Lotor. They also announced that four half-galra female generals would be supporting him. Perhaps most exciting, is that they’ve announced when you should expect to see new episodes of the series on Netflix. August 4th. That’s when the seven episodes comprising of Voltron Legendary Defender season 3 is expected to launch. In October, another new batch of episodes will go live. After 14 years since Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron bagged an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature,  DreamWorks has teamed up again with Netflix to attract attention of a new generation of kids with Spirit Riding Free, an animated spin-off that will make its US debut on the SVOD giant on May 5. The series, aimed at girls between ages of 6 to 10, takes place in the 19th century. It follows 12-year-old Lucky, whose mother dies and she leaves high society life to live with her dad in the American West. She then bonds with a horse named Spirit, the offspring of the main characters from the 2002 movie.   Rovio Entertainment, the owner of Angry Birds has sold its Vancouver-based TV animation studio along with its book publishing business and some unnamed non-Angry Birds IPs, to Kaiken Entertainment. The new L.A.-based startup was recently launched by former Rovio CEO, Mikael Hed. As executive chairman of Kaiken Entertainment, Hed has enlisted a group of former Rovio producers and Kaiken Publishing CEO Laura Nevanlinna to evolve the business beyond books into film, streaming video and apps. Nevanlinna has joined the company as head of franchise and portfolio development, while longtime Rovio producer Ulla Junell will serve as head of animation and president of Kaiken Canada. Russia’ CTC Media in exclusive deal with NBC Universal’s Dreamworks

    Russian broadcaster CTC Media has entered into an exclusive deal with NBC Universal’s DreamWorks for a number of animated kids’ series that would be aired on its flagship network CTC In the package are the DreamWorks Dragons series' Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk and Race to the Edge; Turbo FAST, All Hail King Julien, The Mr. Peabody & Sherman Show, The Adventure of Puss in Boots and Dawn of the Croods.  The agreement follows CTC’s previous rights deal for DreamWorks Animation feature films. “Animation is the cornerstone of children’s content programming for CTC network,” said Vyacheslav Murugov, CEO of CTC Media. “Animated series from Dreamworks Animation are one of the best products in its genre, and it is conceptually corresponds with CTC’ family audiences.”

DreamWorks has gifted the perfect Christmas and New Year gift with the first look of animated film Captain Underpants EW has brought out the first look of animated film Captain Underpants, based on the books by Dav Pilkey.  It follows two fourth graders named George Beard (Kevin Hart) and Harold Hutchins (Thomas Middleditch), who hypnotize their principal (Ed Helms) into becoming the titular superhero, even though he has no special abilities, just a really big pair of underpants. Director David Soren said: “[Helms] has managed to tap into the sheer stupidity of Captain Underpants. DreamWorks Animation and Universal Studios have reportedly cancelled the upcoming sequel to its 2013 animation, The Croods. Universal Pictures’ chairman Donna Langley confirmed that production of The Croods 2 will be stopped immediately, following a meeting at DreamWorks’ HQ. The Croods 2 had been in development since shortly after the first film became an international box office hit, pulling in over $587 million worldwide. Since things at DreamWorks Animation haven’t been going very well lately, they’re looking to cut corners in areas that they don’t seem to be very confident in. As a result, around 30 employees who were working on the film will now be looking for new jobs. However, workers have been told DreamWorks hopes to keep them at the firm and will work on other film project
