Following in the footsteps of last year’s Hanazuki, toy company Hasbro has launched another new property through a series of animated YouTube shorts. The company launched the first 5 five-minute episodes last Saturday. The series is Chomp Squad that is an original series aimed at kids aged between 3 and 5 about a group of heroes and their partnered dinosaurs. Hasbro has also released the first batch in Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Latin American Spanish, and European Spanish. New episodes are uploaded every Friday morning at 10am (eastern). Chomp Squad has been produced by Hasbro Studios, brought to life by Huminah Huminah Animation, a Canadian studio with offices in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and Hamilton, Ontario. Hasbro Studios has revealed its production slate of 2018-2019 in which there are a bunch of exciting new reveals. While existing favourites will get a makeover, there’s something totally new. Paramount Pictures has pushed back the release date of the third edition of SpongeBob SquarePants to July 31, 2020 from the original release date August 2, 2019. This besides Hasbro toy and game-inspired G.I. Joe releasing in theaters on March 27, 2020. Paramount has also slated Micronauts for October 16, 2020 against an untitled Hasbro film to release on October 1, 2021. Tabletop gaming fans can look forward to a new Dungeons & Dragons adaptation out on July 23, 2021. Hopefully, this venture will turn out better than the 2000 attempt. It has been confirmed that Warner Bros. is no longer developing their D&D project. With the launch of Trivial Pursuit Tap, Hasbro has joined Amazon Echo’s growing content lineup. The interactive game uses Echo Buttons, a US$20 standalone offering that combines voice assistant Amazon Alexa with an Echo device and lets gamers use illuminated buttons to compete in web-connected multi-player or single player competitions. Trivial Pursuit Tap uses ‘buzzers’ that lets players compete with friends and answer questions from one of six categories. The buttons will light up and assign different colors for each player. (Up to four buttons can be connected to a compatible Echo device.) If reports are true, Hasbro has made a bid to take over its main rival Mattel in a deal that would bring together two of the world’s biggest toy manufacturers. The news comes on the heels of the bankruptcy of Toys ‘R’ Us as the industry struggles with both online competition and dwindling demand for traditional toys. Thanks to licensing deals with Disney along with their film franchises at Paramount Pictures like Transformers and G.I. Joe, Hasbro has leveraged a Hollywood presence and turned it into fuel for toy sales which has succeeded.Their total value stands at $11.4 billion which is more than twice that of Mattel at $4.8 billion. The Wall Street Journal broke the news about the talks and the two companies have issued responses saying they do not comment on rumors or speculation.
In a new five-year exclusive deal that will see both the companies collaborate on live-action and animated films based on Hasbro brands as well as original content, Paramount Pictures has expanded its existing relationship with Hasbro. The new deal comes following a 7 per cent increase in Hasbro’s Q3 revenue and net earnings and the announcement of the second-ever HASCON fan convention. While terms of the transaction is under wraps, Paramount and Hasbro will co-finance projects including TV programming at various levels of investment.
