Comic-Con ends on a happy note; welcomes slew of new deals

The just concluded annual Comic-Con International: San Diego that took place last week at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California ended on a happy note having welcomed a slew of new deals, activations and exciting reveals. Highlights from the annual fan convention includes: Moose Toys and Coolhaus teamed up to create a new ice cream flavour celebrating the launch of the Comic-Con Exclusive Shoppie doll, Bubble Gum Pop Bubbleisha. Licensing agent Striker Entertainment tapped NECA to create a series of merchandise for Laika’s films Coraline, ParaNorman, The BoxTrolls and Kubo and the Two Strings. Disney, Universal taps toy licensees for its upcoming movies

As Disney’s Cars and Universal’s Despicable Me head towards their release dates on June 16 and June 30 respectively, the two aren’t just looking at ticket sales. They hace prepared their licensing programmes both hinged on keeping the flame alive for young fans. For Disney’s Cars 3, that involves a licensing push across every category from toys to soup. “Some of our toy licensees include Mattel, Sphero, Thinkway, Funko and Lego,” reveals Josh Silverman, EVP of global licensing at Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media.” In addition, we’re looking to reach new audiences through collaborations on the apparel and accessories side, with brands including Members Only, Illest, New Balance and New Era, just to name a few,” he adds. The Lego Group has launched Lego Life, a free app-focused social network that gives the youngest of builders a safe online platform to bridge their physical and digital play experiences. The network aims to be the next step in the sociability and personalization of Lego, after the company witnessed millions of kids sharing their work in the “Cool Creations” section of Lego Club magazine and using Lego.com message boards to share stories and photos. Toy of The Year (TOTY) Awards finalists unveiled

The Toy Industry Association has named its 100 finalists for the 2017 Toy of the Year (TOTY) Awards. The finalists were selected from 700 nominees submitted by more than 250 companies. Twenty-five judges—including toy experts, retailers, academics and journalists—made the selections across 14 categories. (New genres this year include Action Figure of the Year, Doll of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Vehicle of the Year.) Mattel and Spin Master lead the nominations with eight and seven nods, respectively. Mattel is a finalist in the Action Figure of the Year, Active/Outdoor Toy of the Year, Game of the Year, Innovative Toy of the Year, Specialty of the Year and Vehicle of the Year categories. Mattel also received two nominations in the Doll of the Year category for its Barbie Fashionista

Rovio teams with The LEGO Group to create a collection of building sets related to its 2016 film Rovio, makers of Angry Birds, the most downloaded mobile game ever, today announced a partnership with The LEGO Group to develop a line of construction toys. Toy Industry Association Elects Leadership at Annual Business Meeting

At its Annual Business Meeting held earlier today, the Toy Industry Association (TIA) announced the election of three new members to the TIA Board of Directors for two-year terms of office expiring at the Annual Business Meeting in 2016. The meeting also saw the chairmanship gavel pass to John Gessert of American Plastic Toys from retiring Board Chairman Soren Torp Laursen of The LEGO Group. The Annual Business Meeting included remarks by TIA President Carter Keithley, who shared accomplishment highlights from the first year of TIA’s 2013-2015 Strategic Plan, and Secretary-Treasurer David Hargreaves, COO of Hasbro, who announced that the Association had grown its financial reserves in 2013.
