Cartoon Network’s ‘Over the Garden Wall’ Gets 5 Emmy Nominations

Nominations for the 2015 Primetime Emmy Awards have been announced and, with a whopping 24 nods, HBO’s Game of Thrones once again received the most nominations, including for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Special Visual Effects. Marvel Teams With Bleacher Creatures to Launch Character Plush

Marvel has teamed with Bleacher Creatures to launch several new lines of character plush figures this year featuring Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man and other properties. In May, Bleacher Creatures Avengers: Age of Ultron line will hit shelves and include 10-inch plush versions of Nick Fury, Black Widow, Thor, Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America and Hawkeye. Disney Appoints Staggs to Iger Successor

The Walt Disney Company has promoted 25-year company veteran Thomas Staggs to chief operating officer, in a move widely seen as positioning the executive to succeed current CEO Bob Iger. When Iger was named to lead the company in 2011, it was planned that he would only hold the chief executive position through March 31 of this year, after which he would continue as executive chairman for an additional 15 months, through June 30, 2016. Whether that timeline remains in effect is unclear. Staggs is currently chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts and will continue to lead that division until a successor is named. (more…)

Disney’s Iger characterized Maker as a “unique acquisition opportunity”

In Disney’s Q1 2015 earnings call with investors on Tuesday, company chairman and CEO Bob Iger said there has been “huge growth” in the streaming video numbers for Maker Studios since it was purchased by the company last spring in a deal worth up to US$950 million. He did not cite any figures to illustrate the increases. In spite of his bullish assessment, Iger characterized Maker as a “unique acquisition opportunity” that didn’t necessarily suggest a change in direction for the company overall. (more…)

‘Frozen,’ ‘Gravity’ The Most Pirated Films of 2014

Disney’s ‘Frozen,’ Warner Bros.’ ‘Gravity’ and Paramount’s ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ top the list of most pirated films in 2014. Disney’s Frozen, Warner Bros.’ Gravity and Paramount’s The Wolf of Wall Street topped the list of most pirated films in 2014, according to piracy tracking firm Excipio. The German company compiled the data for the period between January 1 and December 23, 2014. (more…)

Action toys transform Hasbro’s second quarter

Boys toys are driving up sales for the second-largest toy maker in the US. Hasbro has reported an 8% increase in its second quarter revenue, driven by increased demand for Transformers and Marvel products. Overall, company revenues were up 8% to US$829.3 million for the three months ending in June. Earnings were US$33.5 million, down slightly from US$36.5 million in 2013. (more…)

Marvel announces new drinkware partners

Marvel has announced several new US licensing collaborations in the drinkware category, including deals with Thermos and Zak Designs. The new products will include Marvel characters from the Avengers and Spider-Man franchises, including designs inspired by the theatrical releases of Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Marvel’s newest team, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
