If reports are true, Hasbro has made a bid to take over its main rival Mattel in a deal that would bring together two of the world’s biggest toy manufacturers. The news comes on the heels of the bankruptcy of Toys ‘R’ Us as the industry struggles with both online competition and dwindling demand for traditional toys. Thanks to licensing deals with Disney along with their film franchises at Paramount Pictures like Transformers and G.I. Joe, Hasbro has leveraged a Hollywood presence and turned it into fuel for toy sales which has succeeded.Their total value stands at $11.4 billion which is more than twice that of Mattel at $4.8 billion. The Wall Street Journal broke the news about the talks and the two companies have issued responses saying they do not comment on rumors or speculation.

The Toy Industry Association (TIA) has named 122 finalists for next year’s Toy of the Year (TOTY) Awards. The finalists were selected from among more than 600 nominees submitted by more than 150 companies. Twenty judges including toy experts, retailers, academics and journalists made the picks from 17 categories three of which (creative toy of the year, playset of the year and plush of the year) made their debut this year. Mattel leads the nominations with 10 nods, while Spin Master and Hasbro are tied with nine apiece. Mattel has teamed up with California-based Dash Robotics on Kamigami, an insect-themed, build-it-yourself robotics platform that teaches kids how to programme while they play. Launched at Target for US$49.99, the platform includes six different buildable Kamigami robot insects that include a lady bug, praying mantis and scorpion. The bots come as a durable plastic sheet of parts that kids can pop out, fold and snap together. Kids are then able to drive, race or battle their Kamigami through a free companion app, which includes a visual programming interface for blinking lights, playing sounds and maneuvering around obstacles inside or on tougher outside terrain. Mattel has partnered with WWE to launch a girls product line that would feature the first-ever fashion dolls and role-play items inspired by WWE’s female stars. The WWE Superstars line will be available exclusively at Toys “R” Us and will be available for pre-order online on July 24. The dolls will launch at Toys “R” Us stores across the US in September. This is the first time that female WWE wrestlers including Nikki and Brie Bella, Sasha Banks, Natalya, Chartlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Alicia Fox and Eva Marie will have a fashion doll or role-playing line. Mattel has unraveled its five-pronged strategic plan that will see the largest toymaker in the US make major strides in creating digital content, internet-connected toys and products that promote learning. The strategic focus was presented by CEO Margo Georgiadis whose experience of six years at Google has shaped the company’s focus since the top job became hers in January. The strategy will see the company right-size its dividend by more than half to free up resources for re-investment.
