Sesame Workshop and Nelvana announced that Esme & Roy, the first new animated series from the makers of Sesame Street in more than a decade, will debut on August 18 on HBO in the United States and on Treehouse in Canada. The program follows a young girl, Esme, and her best monster friend, Roy, on their adventures as the best monster babysitters in Monsterdale. Corus Entertainment records decline in its Q1 financial results

With slight gains in its kids content business and radio advertising offset by sharper decreases in TV ad revenue, Canadian media conglomerate Corus Entertainment recorded a year-over-year decline in its Q1 financial results. The Toronto-based company posted Q1 revenue of US$332.7 million across its TV assets a climb down by 2% from US$340.8 million at the same period last year while revenue in its radio business remained flat at US$33.5 million. Overall, segment revenue fell to US$366.2 million, from US$374.6 million a year ago. Consolidated profits across TV and radio businesses fell more sharply with TV profits going down by 9% to US$135 million from US$147.6 million in Q1 of 2017. Canadian animation company Nelvana Enterprises has announced D.N.Ace, an all-new comedy-adventure that’ll mix science and fun. Nickelodeon, VStar Entertainment Group and Koba Productions are gearing up to launch a live theatrical production entitled Bubble Guppies Live! Ready to Rock.   Based on Nickelodeon’s pre-school series Bubble Guppies, the US tour will visit more than 30 locations beginning in March 2018. The stage show follows the Bubble Guppies as they search for a missing band member with help from friends like Mr. Grouper. The show will feature music, dancing, comedy and audience participation. Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana has partnered with Round Room Presents to bring its original pre-school series Ranger Rob to the stage in a live global tour. The locations and dates for the tour will be announced in May with the show officially due to kick off in Canada later next year. Recently given the green signal for a second season, Ranger Rob follows the titular character and his friends as they go on adventures in Big Sky Park. The animated series premiered on Corus-owned Treehouse in Canada last fall and NBCUniversal-owned Sprout broadcasts the toon in the US.   Nelvana has given a go ahead to its new animated comedy-adventure series D.N.Ace to begin production. The new series follows curious, adventure-loving, mischief-making, proudly nerdy, 12-year-old Ace Ripley who suddenly learns he holds an incredibly ability to manipulate DNA by fusing the genes of a living thing with any other thing to create something entirely new. The hero-in-the-making must try to save his town from total chaos while also trying to have the time of his life. D.N.Ace will air on the Teletoon Network in Canada. Each episode will be 2x11 minutes with a total of 80 episodes. Furthermore, Dentsu and OLM will be representing the series in Japan and will be consulting throughout the production process.

Canadian animation company Nelvana has announced two major partnerships over the last week that’ll see the company work with others around the world. Firstly, the studio has agreed to launch a Chinese animator incubation programme with distribution company WeKids and animation software ToonBoom. The three will aim to discover new talent and cutting-edge concepts out of China that have the creative potential to be developed into globally successful properties. The winner will receive a development deal. The incubation programme will start accepting submissions in January 2018. Nelvana has also partnered with Discovery Communications to launch a new joint-venture aimed at the Latin American, Canadian and international markets. Sony Pictures Animation (SPA) has released the first-look image of its upcoming computer animated short, Puppy! that is based on its Hotel Transylvania franchise. It was only last week that Nelvana and SPA had announced that their new animated series Hotel Transylvania: The Series was going to debut on Disney Channel starting 25 June. The announcement also informed that three animated shorts will be released before the premiere of the film. However, Puppy! is not going to be a part of these three shorts. Corus Entertainment, the parent company of studio Nelvana has confirmed that its pre-school series Ranger Rob is going in for a second season. The series follows a 10-year-old ranger-in-training as he ziplines, swings and snowboards around Big Sky Park. In addition, the show’s master toy licensee, Quebec-based Imports Dragon, will launch a line of toys based on the series. Targeting a pre-school audience, the in-development toy line will launch in Canada and select European territories in spring 2018 followed by a broader release in fall 2018. The animated show, which debuted on Corus-owned Treehouse in Canada last fall, will return for an additional 14 episodes though no broadcast date has been set yet.
