Nickelodeon has asked for a 12th season of 26 episodes for its iconic cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants, the No. 1 animated show for kids between 2 to 6 and 11. The upcoming adventures of eternal optimist SpongeBob, BFF Patrick, Sandy, Mr. Krabs, Plankton and Squidward in Bikini Bottom will premiere in 2019, the show’s 20th anniversary year. The go ahead signal of the series comes on the heels of confirmation of a third SpongeBob SquarePants film coming from Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies, also due in 2019. Gwen Stefani’s animated series Kuu Kuu Harajuku will launch exclusively on Nickelodeon in the US. The channel is also expecting to release it on October 3 at 4 pm. Kuu Kuu Harajuku follows the adventures of Love, Angel, Music, Baby and G – collectively known as the band HJ5. Nutz Productions’ supernatural drama Spell Keepers, one of four new live-action series for tweens from Israeli partners Keshet International and Ananey Communications Group—has been picked up by Nickelodeon for broadcast in Poland. Despite a major profit decline, Viacom has reported strong Q2 performances for kids net Nickelodeon and the company’s Filmed Entertainment business. Driven by hit series like The Loud House and PAW Patrol, Nickelodeon delivered 6% year-over-year ratings growth with series’ for kids between six to 11 and 5% growth among two- to 11-year-olds. The network also claimed to have all of top 10 television programmes in Q2 with both of the aforementioned demos, and four of the top five preschool shows. Nickelodeon has launched an Entertainment Lab, a Burbank-based research and development facility led by the former creative director of Nickelodeon Animation Lab, Chris Young. Using a long-range strategy, the Entertainment Lab will build prototypes to test new concepts, partner on innovation with creators and evolve the studio’s production capabilities with new tech discoveries. Young would report to Matthew Evans, Nick’s EVP of digital and new business, as well as James Stephenson, SVP of original animation. In his previous role, Young concentrated on analyzing and engineering alternative animation pipelines. SVOD giants Amazon and Netflix have edged out PBS, the perennial broadcasting powerhouse to win most of the awards at the 44th Emmy awards ceremony held last Friday night in Los Angeles. The streaming video platforms together won 24 statuettes (13 for Amazon, 11 for Netflix), while PBS annexed nine awards, six fewer than last year. Netflix and DreamWorks Animation animated comedy Trollhunters was the ceremony’s big winner by collecting six Emmys, the most multiple awards for a kids series. Its key category wins included outstanding writing in an animated programme (Marc Guggenheim), outstanding directing in an animated programme (Rodrigo Blaas, Guillermo del Toro) and outstanding performer in an animated programme (Kelsey Grammer as Blinky). Nickelodeon has lapped up Genius Brand International’s brand-new pre-school series Rainbow Rangers for Nick Jr. US and the Caribbean Basin. It follows Earth’s First Responders, seven girls who set out to save the environment with their unique personality and powers. The around an hour CGI toon is currently under development. The fantasy, action-adventure series was created by an experienced team comprising Rob Minkoff of The Lion King fame, Shane Morris and Tim Mansfield. Co-creator Elise Allen also happens to be the writer in command. Genius Brands chairman and CEO Andy Heyward is executive producing the series with Disney alumni Ruben Aquino. The deal comes shortly after Genius Brands named Fisher-Price as global master toy partner for the property.
Nickelodeon has come out with the names of winners of this year’s Kids’ Choice awards. The event, that was hosted by WWE Superstar John Cena, highlighted the most popular television series, movies, actors, actresses and more in kids’ entertainment. Additionally, the event featured a host of interactive digital experiences that included allowing kids to choose what happened during the show by voting to determine the outcome of multiple stunts at the show. With YouTube videos and Instagram posts ushering in a whole new trend of homemade slime-making, Nickelodeon is bringing its iconic goop to the DIY crowd. In relation to this, New Jersey-based toy and art products manufacturer Cra-Z-Art has partnered with Nickelodeon to market and distribute branded slime kits across the US. The kits will include all of the necessary ingredients to make the network’s famous green slime as well as a variety of colors and textures including glitter, neon and glow in the dark. The kits will be seen on US retail shelves this month.
