Nikita Diakur’s Ugly named winner of Ottawa International Animation Festival

The Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF), has declared the winners of its 2017 edition. The details of the OIAF were announced at an awards ceremony held at Saint Brigid’s Center for the Arts. The Nelvana Grand Prize for Independent Short was collected by Nikita Diakur’s Ugly, a simulated short film about two beings trying to find peace in a dystopic neighborhood. The competition short jury comprised of animation directors Janice Nadeau (Canada), Marta Pajek (Poland), and Theodore Ushev (Bulgaria/Canada). The award comes on the heels of another major prize that Diakur won a couple weeks ago: the New Talent award at Switzerland’s Fantoche festival. Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) has declared that the official competition selections for 2017 would be held from September 20 to 24. In the said competition, 105 short films and 5 features selected from out of 1,992 entries from 85 different countries will vie for attention and awards honours. “What an extraordinary group of films we have this year,” exclaimed Chris Robinson, OIAF Artistic Director. “There is a definite air of defiance, not just in terms of content, but also through stylistic choices and a rejection of conventional narrative storytelling.
