Comic-Con is rightly called the heaven for comic lovers and Bangalore based TBS Planet Comics has cashed on the right platform to launch its brand new comics! Interestingly, the new concepts have taken the mythological lane with a touch of modernity.
TBS launched mythological comics Uttara at Bangalore Comic Con 2017 which was held recently from 2- 3 December. It is the story of a water princess in the submerged city of Dwarka. It also announced a game based on an augmented reality treasure hunt and is similar to the game Pokemon Go.
For all comic book fans, TBS Planet Comics App can be used to read its comics. Whereas, TBS Planet AR App is on play store which enables the AR experience. The AR app will be launched officially in January 2018.
At the recent Mumbai Comic Con 2017, a new superhero comics called “Rudra” was launched. Rudra has the powers of Shiva and Vayu and also performs “Tandaava”. Wow! The other comic series announced here was Barf which has a ice-based supervillain that tries to kill people in Delhi city.
Animation Digital Digest had a quick chat with Rajeev Tamankar who is the founder and CEO of TBS Planet Comics. He spoke at length about his company’s latest releases and the marketing techniques they follow.
“We are doing various genres today like on action superheroes, comedy and horror. Recently, we had done the horror comedy Footsteps and it got sold out completely. The story is based on a spirit which keeps on walking and wherever it walks, it leaves it footsteps or footprints. Later on, it gets possessive. The online part has been launched which is its second part.”
Interestingly, entrepreneur Rajeev is a silver medallist from IIT Roorkee and has worked with Flipkart and Xiaomi before starting TBS. He has an amazing story to tell on how he left corporate and switched to the creative comic world. You will get to read on this soon from us.
Marketing and selling of comics in India where the comic industry is still at a nascent stage can be a daunting task. At TBS, they do it smartly in 4 different ways.
The company is active in all major e-commerce websites like Amazon, Flipkart and has its own website and mobile app as well. The app has crossed 1000 downloads so far. TBS also has digital distribution partnerships with Reliance Jio and has channels on the Jio chat app. Hit TV show KBC is also airing on it. TBS Planet Comics has distributors across 10 cities in India.
Rajeev exclaimed, “ It takes around 2-3 months for production of one comic book. The ideation is done by our own team which consists of 20 people.”
Currently, TBS Planet is into 6 genres- action, superheroes, horror, comedies, mythologies and also into doing moral stories. Recently, it launched Akbar Birbal stories and Panchatantra stories as well. There are plans to take up some digital painted Indian style of artwork maybe next year in January or February 2013.
The Bangalore based comic books studio which started in July 2016 is now home to around eight different Indian superheroes. It has been official comics partners for Bollywood movies like ‘Shivaay’ and ‘A flying Jatt’. Some of its current popular characters have been Ved, Varun, Uttara, and Karma.
